Apple iPhone 16: The Gateway to Apple Intelligence
Apple has unveiled four new models with the introduction of the iPhone 16 as it prepares to roll out Apple Intelligence to markets worldwide.
Apple has now officially launched its highly anticipated iPhone 16 series at the ‘It’s Glowtime’ event held at its headquarters in Cupertino. This marks what can only be considered a significant leap in smartphone technology, with a huge focus on Artificial Intelligence and productivity enhancements.
Four new iPhones launched: the 16 and 16 Plus; the 16 Pro and Pro Max
iPhone 16 starts at £799; 16 Plus at £899; 16 Pro at £999; Pro Max at £1199
Pro models feature slightly larger screens: 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches
All models powered by new second-generation 3 nm A18 chip that supports Apple Intelligence, with A18 Pro offering additional capabilities
Apple Intelligence features to begin rollout with iOS 18.1
Cameras upgraded across range. 48MP Fusion vertical cameras make for more efficient spatial photo and video
New multi-function Camera Control button added
Forthcoming Visual Intelligence feature will analyse images
WiFi 7 introduced
Watch 10 intros larger display and thinner profile
AirPods 4 add Active Noise Cancelling (ACN), Air Pods Pro 2 will double as hearing aids
Arguably this is one of the major iPhone launches across its long and successful history. The iPhone 16 lineup maintains similar pricing to previous generations, which is impressive given the price rises we have seen elsewhere.
In a break with previous years, all four, standard and Pro models alike, feature the latest Apple silicon as the company looks to widen the number of devices that can run its new AI features. The A18 chip has been built using a second-generation 3 nm manufacturing process and features a 6-core CPU, a 5-core GPU, and a 16-core neural engine that will power Apple Intelligence. Apple says the CPU is 30% faster than the A16 chip in the iPhone 15. There is still differentiation between the ranges, with the Pro models supercharged with the A18 Pro chip supporting ProRes video encoding and adding one more GPU core and a new image signal processor.
